Woman Sues Ozempic Manufacturer Over Alleged Severe Complications
A 62-year-old woman has filed a lawsuit against Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of popular weight-loss medications Ozempic and Wegovy, claiming she suffered severe medical complications that led to the removal of her colon.
The Plaintiff's Experience
Juanita Gantt was prescribed Wegovy and later Ozempic to manage her weight, given her family history of diabetes. Initially, she reported positive effects, noting reduced appetite and cravings. However, in October 2023, Gantt experienced severe medical issues allegedly linked to the medications.Gantt was rushed to the hospital after being found unconscious. Doctors discovered that parts of her large intestine had died, necessitating surgical removal. During her recovery, she also suffered cardiac arrest. As a result, Gantt now relies on an ileostomy bag for waste collection.
The Lawsuit
The lawsuit alleges that the drugs' packaging fails to adequately warn users about potential side effects. Gantt is seeking unspecified damages from Novo Nordisk.
About Semaglutide Medications
Ozempic and Wegovy are two of three FDA-approved semaglutide-based weight-loss products available in the U.S. Semaglutide, the active ingredient, is a hormone that promotes insulin production and interacts with brain regions controlling appetite and satiety.
Celebrity Usage and Side Effects
The popularity of these medications has increased, partly due to celebrity endorsements. However, concerns have been raised about potential side effects. Some patients have reported developing gastroparesis, a condition that slows digestion to potentially harmful levels.
Manufacturer's Response
Novo Nordisk has not yet commented on the lawsuit. The case highlights ongoing debates about the safety and efficacy of weight-loss medications and the importance of proper warning labels for prescription drugs.
